The Mar Vista Community Council has an open volunteer position: that of Community Director. We will seek to fill the postion in accordance with Section 6 of our by-laws.
All interested parties should please read the following information about some of what is required of a Board Member of a Neighborhood Council, posted on the LA City Department of Neighborhood Empowerment website (DONE). And here's an article describing what Neighborhood Councils are all about.
It's a lot to read - and all very important to know.
We want to make clear that this is a volunteer position, as are all the Board positions, and that there's a significant time commitment expected from all Board members on the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC). We hold a monthly Board of Directors' meeting that lasts from 1-4 hours, including set up and clean up. And there's prep time for those meetings as well.
Plus Board members are expected to Chair or co-Chair a committee, as well as generally participate in the running of the organization. Many of us put in 10-20 hours per week. Some spend more time than that.
All Board members are required to take all necessary City of Los Angeles trainings for elected officials.
The Community Director will be appointed by the Chair. The term will last, at a minimum, until June 2018, and at a maximum, until June 2019, at which point, the next election will be held. The choice to run again or not would be yours.
According to the MVCC by-laws, these are the criteria for the position of Community Director:
The "Community" Director candidates must be Stakeholders who live, work or own real property in the neighborhood and also those who declare a stake in the neighborhood as a community interest stakeholder, defined as a person who affirms a substantial and ongoing participation within the Neighborhood Council’s boundaries and who may be in a community organization such as, but not limited to, educational, non-profit and/or religious organizations.
Persons who are interested in applying for the position must write a statement of candidacy and submit it to the Chair within 25 days of the July 11, 2017 Board of Directors' meeting (deadline: August 5th, 2017). Email statements to the Chair, Sarah Auerswald. Her email address is [email protected] The names of those submitting statements will be placed on the agenda of the August Board meeting (which is scheduled for August 8th, 2017 at 7pm). Candidates are welcome to make a statement at that meeting in support of their candidacy. After that, the Chair shall appoint one candidate and the Board will vote.
Please email the MVCC at [email protected] if you have any questions.
