What does MVCC do?

Posted on 12/14/16

The Mar Vista Community Council:

  • Provides a forum for discussion of issues that affect the quality of life of MVCC Stakeholders
  • Serves as the advocate for the MVCC area with officials of the City of Los Angeles, other governmental and non-governmental entities, and developers
  • Sponsors community-building celebrations such as the Fall Festival, neighborhood block parties and the Mar Vista Art Walk
  • Supports schools and other organizations that serve Mar Vista with small grants

MVCC has no legal authority, only the power of persuasion. As MVCC's mission states, it advocates.Yet it has some notable successes, including:
  • Stopping a medical marijuana dispensary at Centinela & Palms
  • Saving Historic Fire Station 62 on Centinela for a future community center instead of yet another development
  • Getting an R1V NEW zoning designation for Mar Vista—as requested by the community, and over the Planning Department’s recommendation
  • Getting developer agreement to mitigating changes on many projects
  • Connecting some of our homeless with housing and services

In all of these activities, MVCC is nothing more than the combined energy of all the volunteers who choose to become involved in the process. The MVCC is only effective if stakeholders choose to become involved, both as elected leaders, and also as concerned residents who take the time to involve themselves in the committees, activities, forums, and debates of the Council.
