Vol. VI, No. 6

Captains Message

Nationally, traffic collisions are the leading cause of death among children ages five to fourteen. There are more than 500 children killed and 95,000 injured annually. Many could have been prevented if the children were properly restrained in seat belts or car safety seats.

Listed below are several tips to remember when transporting children or using car safety or booster seats:

  • All children age 12 and under should sit in the back seat properly restrained. The rear seat is the safest place for children.
  • Never use pillows, books, or towels to boost the height of a child. They can slide around and increase the likelihood of injury.
  • Make sure everyone is buckled up correctly. Infants and toddlers should be in car safety seats. Young children should be correctly buckled using a booster seat.
  • Always fill out and mail registration card that comes with the safety/booster seat so notifications can be made in case of a recall.
  • Never use a safety/booster seat that has been involved in a traffic collision. The seat may have defects that are not visible.

California law mandates that all children are secured in a car safety or booster seat until they are at least 6 years old or weigh at least 60 pounds. This law is meant to close the safety gap for children who have outgrown infant car seats, but are not big enough to be protected by adult safety belts. Booster seats are required by law to comply with the same standards and guidelines as car safety seats.

Pacific Officers will educate citizens via various community/business watch meetings throughout Pacific Area on the importance of traffic safety and make every effort to protect drivers on city streets. These efforts combined with the participation and cooperation of the community will help ensure the safety of motorists throughout Pacific Area.

BILL WILLIAMS, Captain
Commanding Officer
Pacific Community Police Station

Walk away, take a deep breath and calm down. Talk to each other or find a third party to help work out the problem. Remember violence never solves anything. Give peace a chance. Be a good neighbor and call the police right away if you observe any altercation escalating to violence.
